Traditional woodworking methods

Perfected over the centuries

The man behind the craft

After a career in business, I came to furniture making in my middle years, and I am passionate about the work I do. For this reason, I set my prices at a level intended to allow clients who might never have thought of commissioning a piece, to be able to afford to enjoy the beauty and functionality of custom-built furniture.

Perhaps a display case for a special item, matching bedside cabinets as a unique engagement or wedding present … or an anniversary gift to replace a cheap pine chest of drawers bought decades ago ?

Carefully crafted...

I work alone, as an independent designer/maker, in my own small workshop.  Because I only take on a couple of projects at any one time, I am entirely focussed on ‘getting it right’ for each client.  I’ll keep you posted on the progress of your piece; and if you’re interested , I’ll gladly  welcome you to my ‘shop for a coffee, a chat, and to see how things are going.

Traditional Hardwoods...

I work almost entirely with traditional hardwoods – I’ll seldom use MDF or plywood, so often the heart of shop-bought mass-produced furniture.  That fact means that my work is based on traditional woodworking methods perfected over centuries – for example using carefully dovetailed drawers – designed because the joints are both attractive to look at and mechanically strong, to withstand years of everyday use.

Lost art...

And did you know that the ‘frame and panel’ style of doors, ubiquitous in office and kitchen designs, are often made of moulded MDF, to replicate the look of the traditional maker’s craft, originally designed to allow for the seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood without cracking?
